Once considered a formidable asset, has India’s demographic bulge turned toxic due to the country’s lost economic decade?For the better part of the past decade, India was touted as the next big economic growth story after China because of its relatively younger population. “Demographic dividend� – the potential resulting from a country’s working-age population being larger than its non-working-age population – was the key phrase.Come 2022, the median age in India will be 28, well below 37 in China and the US.The huge surplus of working-age people should have given the country a competitive edge with cheap labour.
